Shinto (神道) - The Way of the Kami
Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan, and at the heart of Shinto lies a profound reverence for nature. The concept of kami refers to the spirits or gods that inhabit all elements of nature—mountains, rivers, trees, rocks, and even man-made objects. These spirits are believed to embody the sacredness of nature itself. The dark, shadowy landscapes are often revered because they symbolize the power of the kami and the divine presence within nature. The volcanic nature of Lanzarote’s landscape gives the island an aura of primordial force—it’s as if the earth itself is still alive and evolving. Lanzarote embodies a timeless connection to nature. This profound respect for the land and its natural elements allows the island to maintain a balance between preserving its cultural heritage and embracing modern sustainability.
